Video Shows the Moment a 12-Story South Florida Condo Collapses

Surveillance video coming out of South Florida shows the moment a 12-story condominium collapsed, injuring several dozen and killing at least one.

The beachfront condo in Miami-Dade County was built in 1981 and had been sinking for over a decade. Shimon Wdowinski, a professor at Florida International University, conducted a study last year that revealed the condo had been sinking since the 1990s.

“I looked at it this morning and said, ‘Oh my god.’ We did detect that,” Wdowinski said on Thursday. According to the study, the condo had been sinking at a rate of about 2 millimeters a year in the 1990s. “We saw this building had some kind of unusual movement,”  Wdowinski added. However, the focus of the study was on flooding and not necessarily concerned with engineering matters.

Many questions are still left unanswered as a thorough investigation is conducted. City Commissioner Eliana Salzhauer told reporters on Thursday, “I want to know why this happened,” adding, “That’s really the only question. … And can it happen again? Are any other of our buildings in town in jeopardy?”
