A new virtual reality video game called “Our America” aims to fight racism by putting the player in the driver’s seat of a black man’s car as he takes his son to school. On the way, they are pulled over by a police officer and given a series of choices.
Bryant Young, software engineer and creator of the game, spoke about his own experiences with police, including being pulled over with his father when he was 16. Bryant says the officer was ready to pull out his gun when he reached in the glove box for his registration, but things were ultimately deescalated. When it comes to the game, Young stated, “I am really focused on just trying to bring light to a situation that a lot of people are not aware of and give people a chance to experience what it’s like to be Black in America.”
Young has received a $25,000 grant from 3D software company Unity Software Inc. for the game, which should be released around September.
