Young Thug is a better rapper than Talib Kweli, according to a recent Twitter poll. Kweli responded to a fan expressing their outrage in Thug securing 58% of the vote compared to 42%.
“I can’t believe what I’m seeing,” the fan wrote. “The amount of disrespect is ridiculous. @talibkweli goated. To this day I still don’t know what the f*** Thug be saying.”
Talib Kweli posted the reaction on his Instagram page and accepted the defeat gracefully. Starting with a series of laughing emojis, the Black Star member stated that the different styles make it hard to really compare the two rappers.
“These kind of polls always crack me up but probably not for the reasons y’all think,” Kweli wrote. “Young Thug can’t do what I do and I can’t do what Thugga do. I’m secure and comfortable in that. Yes we both can be qualified as rappers technically but what we do and what we have been inspired by regionally and artistically is so different, the gulf is too wide for this kind of comparison.”
Kweli continued by listing rappers that would serve as better matchups, such as Common, Pharoahe Monch, Mos Def, and Black Thought. He also sent words of encouragement to artists who have been dismissed as “mumble rappers.”
“All of this is subjective anyway, but it’s always fun to see people get passionate about hiphop,” he added. “With that said, ain’t nobody beating me in my lane, which is being Talib Kweli, and one love to all the so called ‘mumble rappers’ because while it might sound like mumbling to some of us, many others hear them loud and clear…”
