Over the course of the past four years, TV shows like Euphoria, standout athletes such as Lia Thomas, and companies in the same vein as Disney have helped bring awareness and solidarity for the transgender community to the forefront of pop culture. Now, it appears as though one of the most popular manufacturers in the gaming industry is following suit.
Rockstar has begun the process of removing a litany of characters and jokes that can be considered transphobic from Grand Theft Auto V on next-gen consoles. Noticeable changes have already been made including the removal of characters that were once labeled as “drag queens.”
When the changes first started getting noticed, several gamers attributed the adjustments to an open letter that was written to Rockstar from an LGBTQ+ organization within the gaming community called OutMakingGames. Rockstar has not officially confirmed that theory as of yet, but that didn’t stop OutMakingGames from taking to Twitter to thank them for prioritizing humanity over entertainment.
“Last year we wrote an open letter to @Rockstar, calling on them to remove transphobic content from GTA 5’s next-gen release,” wrote OutMakingGames on Twitter. “We’re thrilled to say that they have. Thank you to everyone at Rockstar who prioritized this issue.”
