New TN Bill Requires Drunk Drivers to Pay Child Support If They Cause Death of a Parent

According to reports, the Tennessee State Senate recently passed a bill that will require drunk drivers responsible for the death of a parent to pay child support.

House Bill 1834 was passed one month after Janet Hinds was sentenced for driving while intoxicated when she struck and killed Chattanooga police officer Nicholas Galinger on Feb. 23, 2019. Hinds was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

“According to the house bill summary, if a defendant is convicted of vehicular homicide due to intoxication or aggravated vehicular homicide and the victim of the offense was the parent of a minor child, then the sentencing court must order the defendant to pay restitution in the form of child maintenance to each of the victim’s children until each child reaches 18 years of age and has graduated from high school.”
