The boy was taken to the hospital on Sunday after sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He later succumb to his injuries at the hospital. The child’s mother, Tinesha Jackson, was charged with negligent homicide after being away from the home at the time of the incident.

The gun’s owner and Jackson’s friend, Tedrick Butler, was charged with criminally negligent homicide, prohibited weapons, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, tampering with evidence or fabricating evidence and possession of a controlled substance.

NBC affiliate Action News 5 reports that “[w]hile in custody, Butler admitted to leaving the AR-15 pistol in Jackson’s bedroom, he also admitted to removing the weapons from the bedroom prior to the search.”
