Michigan teen shoots brother with rifle after mistaking him for a deer

A Michigan teenager shot his younger brother with a rifle after mistaking him for a deer, authorities said.

The 12-year-old Kent County boy — who remained hospitalized Wednesday in serious but stable condition — had gone into a wooded area in Solon Township north of Cedar Springs to call his brother to dinner, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

The older sibling, 17, was hunting from a tree stand, sheriff officials said.

“Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor,” department officials said in a statement Tuesday.

The identities of the siblings were not released due to their ages. Kent County Sgt. Eric Brunner declined to indicate where the 12-year-old boy was shot or how many times he was struck, citing an ongoing investigation.

There’s no indication the shooting was intentional, but it remains unclear if the 17-year-old boy will face criminal charges, Brunner said.
