Former NFL Player Geno Hayes Dead at 33 After Battle with Liver Disease

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Florida State linebacker Geno Hayes has passed away at 33 after a two-year battle with liver disease.

The news comes after Geno told ESPN last month that he was on the waiting list for a liver transplant at the Mayo Clinic and Northwestern Medicine after being hospitalized over 20 times in the past year. Hayes reportedly believed that the liver disease stemmed from the use of nonprescription pain medications and liver disease that ran in his family.

The Bucs released a statement, which reads, “We are deeply saddened to learn of Geno Hayes’ passing. During his time with the Buccaneers, Geno was a beloved teammate and often the first player to volunteer his time to our efforts in the community. He frequently visited schools and had a remarkable ability to connect with children. Losing him at such a young age is heartbreaking. Our thoughts are with his family.”
