Facebook Apologizes After AI Software Refers to Black Men as “Primates”

Facebook is under fire after their A.I., and facial recognition referred to a group of Black men in a video as “primates.”

The situation was spotted by the New York Times after a video surfaced via Daily Mail showing Black men being harassed by a white man. Under the video, an automated message was sent from Facebook asking the user if they would like to “keep seeing videos about Primates?” The video reportedly stems from June 2020 and has no type of connection to any animal or primate.

Misidentification of people via A.I., specifically Black people, has been a hot topic over the last few years, with many people being imprisoned due to being wrongfully pinpointed by software for crimes. Facebook has spoken on the matter since, issuing an apology for the faulty tech.

Facebook spokesperson Dani Lever said, “As we have said, while we have made improvements to our A.I., we know it’s not perfect, and we have more progress to make. We apologize to anyone who may have seen these offensive recommendations.” Take a look above.
