Body of skier missing since Christmas found in California mountains

The body of a skier who went missing on Christmas was found over the weekend, miles from a Lake Tahoe-area resort where he had vanished from on a ski trip, authorities said.

Rory Angelotta, 43, was discovered near a residential neighborhood located in the town of Truckee, roughly 3 miles from the Northstar Ski Resort near Lake Tahoe, California, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday.

Authorities said Angelotta may have been trying to make it to safety in the neighborhood after getting caught up in one of the storms that struck the area in December.

“It is possible Angelotta was attempting to find the neighborhood near Truckee when he succumbed to the elements,” authorities said.

The county coroner will determine the exact cause of death, authorities said.

Friends had reported him missing shortly before 10 p.m. on Dec. 25 when he didn’t show up to Christmas dinner after telling them that he was going skiing.

Over six days, more than 200 people searched for Angelotta using skis, snowmobiles and a helicopter.
